"We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special."
-- Stephen Hawking
Today we are just a bunch of civilized people thriving on the face of Earth but what makes us special is our curiosity to know more about the world around us and more so our capability to find out the truths behind our very existence. These days science along with its wonderful inventions has become a basic necessity for every single soul. Today not only the young but the old have also been influenced by its wonderful cluster of inventions.
By this we can say that Science is surely a boon but it has become difficult to say so, for as much as it has provided us with an opportunity to peek into the vast ocean of technology, it has also given some the toys capable of mass destruction. Science which allowed us to witness our incredible planet and the space beyond it has also rendered many homeless. People whose motive is destruction have turned the field of science to a medium for destruction for which it was never intended to be used. Where scientists are struggling for the welfare of our planet and its people, some others are using the very same science to amputate the arms of peace of our world.
But all these still can't prove that science is a bane or a curse for as much as it has caused widespread destruction and chaos, it also has given many a ray of hope. It has restored the lives of millions of people around the globe. It has given a new lease of life to many. The field of medical science has gifted the world synthetic limbs called prosthetics and along with it the capability to doctors to save the lives of many by transplantations, nanobots etc. Science has made us capable to discover the deepest trenches of the oceans to the infinite horizons of space. It has given us the ability to unearth the secrets of the past. It has made us capable to study the galaxies beyond ours, to know where did we come from and how. It has provided us with enough resources and technology to be able to send a spacecraft to other celestial body and search for signs of life other than us. It has helped us to detect potential dangers to the Earth and helped us solve them.
But again, there we are making ammunitions for warfare. They that it is for securing peace but can't we secure peace by any other way. The peace secured using force is not to be relied on for once the defeated country gets enough resources, it is going to retaliate. And then the same old stories of death, fear, and war torn countries. Aren't all these endangering the real motive of science that is to be able to help mankind prosper and flourish, make our lives easier and help those in need?
In the end I would like to conclude that science becomes a boon when used for the betterment of the society, mankind and the world. But it becomes a bane when people use it for destruction and warfare.
