Bob said, “George do you remember about the last topic of English that Ma’am discussed in the class?’
George replied, “Not exactly!”
“Do you suffer from short-term memory loss?” Bob asked.
Indeed, this is a very common conversation among students. But what do they actually mean? What Bob exactly wanted to mean by ‘short-term memory loss’?
Memory is that faculty of the brain by which information is encoded, stored and retrieved when needed. Often memory is understood as an informational processing system that is made up of a sensory processor, short-term or working memory and long term memory and when a person is unable to retrieve data from his working memory we often term it as short-term memory loss.
Here we are going to discuss about 10 best ways to improve the memory. Most people consider proper diet, good night sleep and health fitness as some of the major factors affecting ones memory. Undoubtedly, these are some important elements which do affect our memory, but there are some other external factors which play a vital role in shaping our memory.
To start with, playing memory games boost the cognitive function of the brain and can be hugely beneficial as it improves concentration and memory. Memory games are the best brain exercise that exercises certain parts of human body. Continuous play of the games makes human brain more sharp as compared to those who don’t play these games. In addition, as the level of the games increases every time, one deals with a higher level that helps to boost the brain. It enhances brain skills like concentration, focus, attention level and so on. Proper exercising the brain help to reduce memory loss too.
Secondly, we come to audiovisual learning. Audio visual aids are important in education system as teaching becomes easier for teachers and a concept becomes interesting for learners. Various researchers have shown that teaching with the help of audio-visual aids has helped the students learn and retain the concept better and for longer duration. Audio visual material makes learning more permanent since students use more than one sense.
Next, we come to sequential learning. Sequential learning is learning and problem-solving in a systematic manner. Sequential learners always try to solve the problem by using a series of logical step. The children always try to relate their problems to a concept they already know and this enhances their power to retain things in their memory.
To recognize an easy pattern of learning helps to memorize, use and retain a concept much further than normal learning. Research has shown that students who have been given opportunities to discover patterns have shown better results as compared to those who have based their studies only on theories.
Often students think that each class is an isolated event- each containing discreet chunks of content. They hardly recognize that each class and content are inter-connected. So the best way to prove the intent connection is recapitulation. Recapitulation refreshes student’s memory, helps them to develop presentation skills and gives them an opportunity to speak in front of their peers thereby enhancing their confidence in public speaking.
Working up a sweat helps to manage physical and mental stress. Exercise also increases concentration. Both physical and mental fitness are two interrelated concepts. There are several mental benefits of physical fitness. Physical fitness increases the efficiency of the body and mind and influences brain function. Exercise, proper diet, a good night’s sleep and meditation are additional factors which boosts the confidence level and enhances the proper functioning of brain in an individual.
It has been widely accepted that music has a therapeutic power. It has various positive effects on mood and mental health. It often increases the efficiency of the brain processing. Music is of various kinds but a general accepted theory is that classical music helps to increase individual focus. Music is a healer to problems like dementia, autism, Alzheimer and other mental disorders. Evidence has shown that music therapy is also beneficial among people suffering from depression.
Atmosphere plays a pivotal role in shaping ones personality development, Brain imaging research suggests that growing up in a disadvantaged environment causes the brain to develop differently. Similarly a child’s brain gets highly influenced by a positive atmosphere for e.g a child growing up in a doctor’s family tends to remember the names of the medicines of most of the diseases as he/she listens to them often since their very childhood.
Sometimes memory retention does need some kind of association – associating the points to daily life things. To justify the same we can draw example from the periodic tables. If one has to remember the 116 elements of periodic table, we can associate each row with some kind of event in a sequence. This technique is helpful in memorizing and retaining large data for a longer period of time.
These are few memory enhancing strategies. Recently several brain and memory training programmes have been popular, but research shows that they don’t work well for everyone. Test shows that people spending more time experimenting and studying tend to show better results in terms retaining things as compared to those who spend more time on tests. What matters for memory is not only how much time we spend on trying to remember something, but where we put our efforts.
One of the great poets of Scotland explains the real wealth you have between your ears:
“A man’s real possession is his memory.
In nothing else is he rich, in nothing else is he poor.”
