"Teaching is not a lost art, but the regard for it is a lost tradition."
Educators, Mentors, Guru, Guide whatever we may be called but the motto remains unaltered and undeterred. The motto is to lay the foundation stone for future and keep building it up with dedication and targeted efforts.
The role of educator has changed a lot from last decades. Let’s go back to the eighties. The educators were more authoritative and they were considered to be the persons who can’t be argued back. They were respected elite class at that time. The teaching methodology was one way and least interactive. The methodologies were quite monotonous. The learning was more of rote learning. The teaching was practiced along with preaching. Teacher used to be the final authority.
Nineties was the decade of transition from being one way and tutor led to interactive & learner based. The system became more directive and the role of educator started being passive.
Involvement started from both sides. Introduction of technology changed the face of teaching & learning. The education system was result oriented & skill based. Project based learning started giving free hand to learners. Parents were indebted to educators and considered them the true mentors for their kids. Students used to show ample respect to their educators and considered them to be their role models. Teacher was the authority still and used to have command over all.
The turnaround phase, twenties. The environment started becoming democratic. The freedom became the essence of learning & teaching. Learner became the target & centre of learning & teaching. Activities took the place of teaching; more demonstrations become a part of scenario. Educator is the facilitator now. The image of guru shifted to the image of friend & more cordial. The environment is more cohesive & coherent where both the sides were being benefitted. In today’s scenario educator has become the facilitator, the one who provides the learning ambience with constructive inputs and thoughts.
But slowly & steadily the reputation & regards for educator has been minimized. Students have started showing disrespect towards educators. Parents have also started blaming educators for the failure of learning of their wards instead of the capabilities of their kids. Blame game has started.
Education system has become so much student centric & friendly, to my agony it has ignored all the respect of educators. Standard of education is being demeaned & scrutiny in the system is required to bring the long awaited change to bring back the glory of education & educator.
Education is not to reform students or amuse them or to make them expert technicians. It is to unsettle their minds, widen their horizons, inflame their intellects, and teach them to think straight, if possible.
