All teachers can prepare their lesson and deliver it in the class. Whether they are doing justice to their profession or not is a different matter. They forget that theirs is a noble profession, as teachers are the power houses behind every progress and discovery in various spheres of life. Haim G. Ginott has aptly said, “Excellent teachers are expected to reach unattainable goals with inadequate tools.” Its every teacher’s responsibility to enable a student excel in all his endeavour and make him realize and fulfill his dreams and aspirations.
Now the question arise: How a teacher can get the best work from students and make them realize their dreams? First and foremost teacher needs to understand the physical and mental makeup, family background, the demands and requirements of the students and then deal accordingly to get maximum output. Great teaching starts with a great reason to teach. Students should also know why they are spending time in school learning a particular topic or subject.
Conducive environment is imperative for enriching personality, realizing full potential and achieving multi – dimensional growth. Students have immense potentials and abilities, which need to be identified and utilized properly to get desired results. Ample opportunities should be created to nurture their imagination and showcase their talents in literary, scientific and sports and games fields. Instill in them a sense of responsibility and ownership towards everything they do and at the same time help them unravel the latent power within them and channelize it in a productive way. Every child is unique and has own strengths and limitations. They are fragile and emotional, hence should be handled with care. Never compare and label them. An effective teacher makes it possible for each child to err with impunity. To welcome mistakes is to encourage learning.
Among the factors that contribute to the best performance, motivation is the most important one; it regulates and sustains all actions towards the goal. Keep showering praise upon them for good work. Develop self-esteem and positivity. A positive disposition helps minimize adverse conditions and anticipate the best possible outcome.
Technology is a boon as students grasp concepts better and in less time with its use. E-learning, audio-visual methods are of great value both for teachers and students. Make bookish topics fun for them by fun games, multimedia presentation, role-play, quizzes etc. to help them to understand and retain topics much better.
Quality Education, research and innovation are primary tools for development. These are the basic requirements to trigger excellence among students. Classroom should be a place for children to learn, explore and experiment. They should be creatively engaged. Encourage questions and let students argue logically. Lectures should also be very interactive in nature, as it makes learning logical, sequential and effective. Follow up and periodical checkups are mandatory for the best outcome. Effective lesson plan pave the way for a completely engaged classroom. Skits, talk shows and plays are a great way to engage students and motivate them to find and develop love for a subject. When interest is high, the substance, the stuff is easily retained. It is evident that students who have close positive and encouraging relationship with their teachers have attained higher levels of achievement than those students with weak relationship. Rapport should be built with students to get the best work. Teacher should use proper language as words can work miracles. They can heal broken hearts; can give wings to dreams and soothe aching mind. Teachers should be approachable and listen intently to the children.
In this competitive world of professionalism, excellence is the need of the hour. Making useful notes play a vital role in helping students to learn easily with perfection. Do practical projects and experiments. Relate relevant content and current events to their daily lives.
Teachers need to be role model because they teach more by who they are than by what they say. Teachers in India are severely hampered by the fact that their own learning experiences have been dull and pedantic. They should always be stocked with information and knowledge regarding the subject and be technologically one step ahead of the students. Students can acquire information from anywhere but it is human touch, which hasn’t made teacher obsolete.
